Sound Motives is an audio documentary by Dave O’Donnell, the senior producer at Gilles Peterson and Simon Goffe’s production company Mistral Productions.
Following episodes with producer Shigeto and duo Kenton Slash Demon, O’Donnell’s third is with south London based DJ and producer Mala.
Mala's work explores the musical and cultural traditions of other countries such as Cuba and Peru, fusing them with his electronic sound. Over the last decade, both as Mala and alongside the producer Coki as Digital Mystikz, he has played a central role in the development of dubstep. Mala’s record label Deep Medi Musik has catalogued releases from many of the scene’s artists over the past 10 years. His south London clubnight DMZ has played a role in defining the genre from its early form to today.
Featured in the third episode by Mala are tracks from Cypress Hill, Ghost, Coki, Augustus Pablo, Kahn and Stormzy. The third episode of Sound Motives explores Mala’s early influences, his perspectives on the rise of dubstep, his relation with the club culture and how the future looks for his sound.
