BBE Records is to reissue Houston Talent Expo ’82, a compilation of original music from young Texan musicians, compiled by community music group The People’s Workshop. In the years since its original release in 1982, it has become a coveted collector’s item.
Founded in 1979 at Texas Southern University, The People’s Workshop allowed students to compose and perform their own work outside the academic curriculum. Still extant, past participants in the programme have included Beyoncé, Yolanda Adams and Robert Glasper.
Houston Talent Expo 82‘ boasts an eclectic mix. Between the smoothly sensual opener 'Let’s Get High' and hymnal closer 'A Song For The Children', there is synthetic funk, ecstatic gospel and proto hip-hop. The whole disc retains an optimistic attitude, celebrating love, faith and community. Many of the artists featured remain active today.
Named after the classic Universal Robot Band track, Barely Breaking Even (BBE) was founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah and Ben Jolly. It is renowned for unearthing buried classics of soul, disco and house.
