It's all in the name: DJ Phil Asher's genre-hopping Restless Soul Fun Band wants you to enjoy yourself. It's fitting then that their only album is called Fun. First released on the Japanese label Selective 81 in 2013, it has now been reissued by BBE Music.
The album features London-based singer Zansika, whose vocals on tracks like 'Taking Over Me' and 'Off My Mind' are a nod to 1990s R&B and neo-soul. Others, such as 'Sunshine Smile', take a funkier turn, while 'Turn Me Out' draws on a broken beat.
“We tried not to force this album into any specific pigeonhole,” said Asher for its Japanese release. “It’s a music album and in making it, we all had a lot of fun.”
Phil Asher will be performing at Jocks&Nerds's party at Number 90, Hackney Wick this Friday, 29 January.
