The late-February release of a recently discovered João Gilberto and Stan Getz live recording is, with justice, overshadowing other bossa nova-related releases right now. The sublime Getz/Gilberto 76 finds the singer/guitarist and tenor saxophonist reunited at San Francisco’s Keystone Korner jazz club 13 years after recording their historic Getz/Gilberto LP in 1963.
But don’t let another reunion pass you by. Natural brings back together Italian producer Nicola Conte, the compiler of Far Out Recordings’ highly-regarded Viagem series of obscure but wonderful Brazilian bossa tracks from the 1960s, and singer Stefania Dipierro, a member of Conte’s Bari-based acid jazz collective, Fez, in the 1990s. Dipierro sang on the band’s landmark album Jet Sounds. The sensual and sumptuous Natural is another outstanding collaboration.
