For the last 20 years, Phil Mison AKA Cantoma’s work as a DJ, producer and songwriter has earned him a high position in the world of Balearic.
Cantoma’s latest album Just Landed features chill-out figures such as Javier Bergia, a former member of the ambient group Finis Africae and the ancient music ensemble Atrium Musicae de Madrid in the 1980s; Bing Ji Ling, a key member of the Balearic supergroup Paqua; and singers Brenda Ray and Suad Khalifa.
Phil Mison’s DJ career started in 1991 at London’s Milk Bar, where he would play Balearic warm-up sets. A chance meeting at Milk with the chill-out DJ Jose Padilla – his main influence – eventually led to a two-year residency at Cafe del Mar, Ibiza, then to playing at the Full Circle and Bugged Out festivals before becoming a touring DJ for the duo Leftfield.
After releasing his first compilation Original Chill Out in 1995, Mison has gone on to release 12 compilations, record with his friend Pete Herbert as Reverso 68 and, since 2003, release music under the moniker Cantoma.
