John Varvatos and Phaidon are behind a book and exhibition compiling a rarely seen collection of punk ephemera.
Oh So Pretty: Punk in Print includes an array of fanzines, gig posters, flyers and badges from the over 450-piece large Mott Collection. It includes material created for bands such as the Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols and Jam.
At John Varvatos’s London boutique, the gallery space includes images from the book. The artworks in Oh So Pretty reflect punk’s graphic style – photocopied images, hand-drawn and ransom-note lettering, and crudely cut and torn edges.
For the exhibition, which coincides with Frieze London, there will be 100 copies of the book signed by author Toby Mott on sale – before its official release on 10 October.
For the launch, Mott said: “The collection – a selection which appears in the pages of my book Oh So Pretty and a selection which will appear at the exhibition in October at John Varvatos store in London – illustrates the energy, boredom, dynamism and diverse social and class issues that were all part of punk. I'm happy working with both John Varvatos and Phaidon where we all share and recognise the creative spirit and vitality of punk.”
