Brighton Photo Biennial 2016

The 23rd edition of the Brighton Photo Biennial is focused around the idea of identity

This year's Brighton Photo Biennial, titled Beyond the Bias, is themed around ideas of identity, particularly the way photography is able to shape a projected image.

Curated by the local non-profit organisation Photoworks, the biennial takes place throughout the month of October. It features three major exhibitions: the European premiere of curator Shantrelle P. Lewis's The Dandy Lion Project, a collection of 150 photographs of the 'Black Dandy' phenomenon; a show by photographer Ewen Spencer that depicts young people in Liverpool and at the Notting Hill Carnival; and Reimagine (working title), a collaboration between Olivia Arthur and Bharat Sikka that explores self-image in relation to gender and sexuality.

Alongside these headline shows, there will be several satellite shows. On 30 September, there will be a series of panel discussions featuring the photographers and curators on show. 1 October will see the launch of the 23rd Photoworks Annual Issue.
