NK Guy’s book Art of Burning Man looks at the ritualistic burning of a wide range of sculptures and structures within the Burning Man festival’s playground. It is accompanied by an exhibition of the same name at the Lights of Soho gallery.
The weeklong Burning Man commemorates the summer solstice in the deserts of Reno, Nevada. Guy explains that, “over the last 16 years, I’ve witnessed it become the largest show of interactive art on the planet.” The festival challenges the mainstream convention of preserving artworks and an artist’s self-worth. To destroy their own work; artists make a notable creative sacrifice.
