The eight-piece group MAKU Soundsystem are a New York band from Colombia. Their fourth album Mezcla is about their experiences living in a foreign city and is filled with hip-moving tracks such as ‘Haitiana’ and ‘What Do You Wish For’.
The group was formed over years of rehearsals and gigs across America – from New York to Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Canada, and Europe. Speaking about the album, synthesiser Juan Ospina said, “we try to keep it human… to give people something they can relate to.”
He continues: “The immigrant experience is complex. Though reasons and conditions for migrating vary greatly (modes of transportation, access to resources and language, fear of violence, health, etc.), one thing we can certainly say is that it is a life-changing, identity-shaping experience.”
